It stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell as a couple on an Alpine ski trip, which is not the worst premise. They bicker and blunder within the parameters of their familiar comic personas, and you almost believe that their characters (Billie and Pete) could actually be married. He is a needy, amiable, slightly hysterical doofus. She is impatient and anxious. Their twin preadolescent sons (Julian Grey and Ammon Ford) barely have personalities at all, but as the family arrives in Austria it seems possible that the audience will have a good time even if the characters don’t. But it doesn’t work out that way. “Downhill, ” directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (whose previous vacation comedy was “The Way, Way Back”), is a remake of “Force Majeure, ” a 2014 Swedish film directed by Ruben Ostlund. Comparing the two is a dispiriting exercise. Ostlund’s version is a sharp, relentless satire of masculine insecurity and middle-class complacency, threading genuine discomfort among improbable laughs. The humor in “Downhill” is broader, which is fine in itself, but the movie is also sloppy, timid and unsure of its tone. It isn’t disturbing, just annoying. Early in their stay at a luxurious mountain resort — after they meet the sexed-up Euro-trash-caricature concierge (Miranda Otto) but before the arrival of the hashtag-crazy millennial-caricature couple (Zach Woods and Zoe Chao) — Pete and Billie experience something that threatens to destabilize their relationship. A “controlled avalanche” set off by the resort’s management looks as if it’s going out of control and heading for the outdoor restaurant where the family is about to have lunch. Pete flees in a panic, grabbing his phone and leaving Billie with the terrified children. Later, he denies and downplays his cowardice, while Billie seethes. This is pretty much exactly what happens in “Force Majeure. ” The idea that a split-second, unthinking action like Pete’s could reveal a flaw in his character and a schism in his marriage is potent enough to sustain a second movie. But Faxon and Rash, who wrote the screenplay with Jesse Armstrong, lack the nerve or the imagination to make the idea their own, or to make it work with a cast of American comic performers. There are some jokey parts, some weepy bits, a sexy moment and a few fine displays of anger from Louis-Dreyfus, but they’re all just thrown together like salted nuts and cheap candies in a snack mix. Like too many American movie comedies these days, “Downhill” seems afraid of its own shadow. The swearing and the drug references can’t disguise a paralyzing panic — about parenthood, sexual politics, family dynamics, work-life balance or anything else that might actually be interesting or risky. The film isn’t sure whether to take Pete’s side or Billie’s, or if it should really take a side at all, and so it hovers like an insincere friend, nodding and chuckling and refusing to judge. The result is a small disaster. Not a completely terrible movie — mostly thanks to Ferrell and Louis-Dreyfus — but one that strands its stars in situations that are at once impossible and insufficiently challenging. “Downhill” gets way out over its skis, even though it never leaves the bunny slope. But early on in the film, as the family dines outdoors, Pete panics at the sight of a controlled avalanche barreling toward the hotel. He runs away without thinking, abandoning his wife, Billie (played by Louis-Dreyfus), and their children. Though no one is hurt, the memory of what happened is enough to start splintering Billie and Pete’s partnership in all directions. Louis-Dreyfus has a similar comedic background to Ferrell’s—she even worked on Saturday Night Live all those years ago. Any time she’s given a meaty film role, she rises to the occasion; her last movie appearance, in 2013’s Enough Said, was marvelous. In Downhill, she’s similarly nuanced, letting Billie’s shock and pain over Pete’s abandonment escape out of her little by little. Her performance matches the understated irony of Force Majeure, where much of the dark comedy arises from the fact that neither husband nor wife sees the silliness in the circumstances that provoked their fight. Their most ridiculous lines are pitched with perfect seriousness, which makes the slow dissolution of their marriage all the more achingly funny. With Ferrell, though, there’s no wry humor to be had; it just makes sense that a character played by him would, on instinct, run away from danger. The actor has spent so many years satirizing a particularly silly figure of American egocentrism—the can-do, beer-drinking macho man who’s always one minute away from throwing a temper tantrum—that I couldn’t set aside that persona. This is fairly subdued and sad work from Ferrell, along the lines of his more dramatic performances in Stranger Than Fiction or Everything Must Go; I could see him working to avoid a lot of his usual tics. But given that all of Downhill ’s tension revolves around the simple set piece of the avalanche, Pete is hobbled by Ferrell’s reputation for playing fools. All in all, the weaknesses and strengths of this remake boil down to the unavoidable fact that Force Majeure, a film I’ve seen multiple times and consider one of the best of its decade, isn’t a work that can be improved upon. Rash and Faxon’s winks toward the original, such as a cameo from its cast member Kristofer Hivju, serve only to remind viewers of a much finer movie. The advantage, for those who haven’t seen Force Majeure, is that Östlund’s story concept has an inherent magic that Downhill can’t help but capture. The story’s central confrontation, which comes about halfway through Downhill, sees Pete lamely trying to defend himself while Billie finally articulates how she felt when he ran away from the family. Even having seen this dynamic play out in the earlier movie, I found it electrifying—Louis-Dreyfus is fantastic in the scene, and Ferrell is at his least goofy and most hangdog. Yet it’s not enough to overcome the pointlessness of Downhill ’s existence. I cannot in good conscience recommend buying a ticket to see it when Force Majeure is easily available to rent. (CNN) "Downhill" is an unfortunate title for a film that starts out with an intriguing cast pairing (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell) and premise, before going you know where. The bottom line is a plot intended to make one consider life's big issues merely reminds us it's too short to sit through movies as muddled as this. Definitely not a comedy -- and indeed, the virtual opposite of a Valentine's Day movie -- the film was adapted from the 2014 Swedish title "Force Majeure" by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, in their directing debut, sharing script credit with Jesse Armstrong (the creator of HBO's "Succession"). The story begins with Pete (Ferrell) and Billie (Louis-Dreyfus) on a ski vacation with their two sons in the Austrian Alps. They hit the slopes, and the movie hits the skids. While there appears to be a degree of tension in the couple's relationship -- and Pete is clearly going through some things thanks to the death of his father months earlier -- the trip is getting along well enough until a scary moment, when an avalanche suddenly strikes. While Billie sits stunned with the boys, Pete leaps to his feet and runs. Everyone's OK, but that single moment -- his instinctive response to think of himself, not them, during a near-death experience -- becomes a growing source of friction, one that continues to fester the longer it goes unaddressed. What ensues is a painful stretch of pregnant pauses and uncomfortable silences, in a movie that runs less than 90 minutes but feels much, much longer. (As an aside, "Downhill" joins a list of clunkers that Disney inherited in its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, and is being released under the new Searchlight Pictures banner. ) It doesn't help that the few notable supporting characters -- including Miranda Otto as a free-spirited hotel worker with a German war-movie accent -- seem to have parachuted in from a different film, there solely to force the characters into situations that will prompt them to confront and reexamine their choices and lives. Their shared "Saturday Night Live" comedy chops notwithstanding, Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell are certainly capable of pulling off the drama of a marriage in crisis, and she has one powerful scene in which her rage comes gushing out. For the most part, though, they're ill-served by the flimsy material, which leaves gaping holes in the characters -- and thus clues to understand them -- that even these earnest performances can't fill. Pete keeps quoting his late dad -- who was fond of saying "Every day is all we have" -- to explain his upbeat "seize the day" mentality. Yet in his melancholy, he's clearly envious of a younger coworker ("Silicon Valley's" Zach Woods) who arrives at the resort with his girlfriend (Zoe Chao), touting a "no agenda" approach to life that speaks to Pete's dull ache over roads not taken and commitments made. Still, so what? Middle-age angst is a fertile topic, but "Downhill" doesn't bring anything fresh to the conversation. All it does, really, is make one marvel at how a project that must have looked promising on paper can quickly careen downward -- like an avalanche, only here, in slow motion.
